Medicine Hat, AB (October 13, 2021) On October 12, 2021 Trustees on the Medicine Hat Public Board of Education passed Policy 546: COVID-19 Harm Reduction Policy. This policy requires that all adults who enter Medicine Hat Public School Division buildings be either vaccinated against COVID-19 or present proof of a negative rapid-test taken within 72 hours. Staff and contracted service providers will provide proof via processes shared internally. Upon request, all other adults will be required to present proof of vaccination, or negative test, to MHPSD staff when entering for a meeting or event. Proof of vaccination must be in the form of a government issued QR code (or original records indicating full vaccination) and accompanied by photo ID. School and jurisdiction staff will be happy to provide virtual opportunities for an adult who is unable or unwilling to follow this direction.

This policy does not apply to the students we serve. MHPSD does not have the authority to mandate vaccination for students.

This action aligns with the guidance of Alberta Health, Health Canada, the Ministers of Health and Education, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, and Legal Counsel. It is supported by the principles that have guided their decision making throughout the pandemic. Medicine Hat Public School Division is committed to maintaining safe school environments that support learning and provide stability of service throughout the pandemic. This temporary policy (to be reviewed every six months, or as needed) is one more important measure we are taking to protect students and staff from an identified risk to their health and to that of their loved ones. Prior to its passing, the policy was shared for review by the Alberta Teachers’ Association, our CUPE Local, and the Coordinating Committee. The Coordinating Committee is made up of the prior-mentioned organizations as well as school council representation, the Board, and members of MHPSD’s executive leadership team.

The safety of students and staff remains our top priority as we work to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Staff and other adults entering MHPSD buildings will have until November 30th, 2021, to bring themselves into compliance.
